Nikki Hill está de nuevo de gira por nuestro país con nuevo trabajo bajo el brazo (“Heavy Hearts, Hard Fists”). Una nueva oportunidad de disfrutar de una de las estrellas emergentes del nuevo Soul.

Desde que debutase hace 3 añitos con "Here´s Nikki Hill" el crecimiento de esta chica de Carolina del Norte ha sido imparable, hasta erigirse como una de los rostros más reconocibles de la escena. Nikki Hill y su banda están en plena gira por nuestro país, y nosotros aprovechamos la coyuntura para charlar un rato con ella.
Hola Nikki, ¿Qué tal? Supongo que preparándote para la inminente gira española, algo que ya es habitual desde tu primera visita en 2013. El público español te ha cogido cariño ¿no?

¡Hola! ¡Vamos genial! Muy animada de volver a España para nuestro próximo tour. España es uno de nuestros sitios favoritos para tocar, y con muchos fanáticos de la música Americana, lo que nos ayuda a hacerlo muy bien por ahí y la respuesta a nuestra música y nuestros conciertos parece ser muy buena. Siempre me sorprendió las giras tan extensas que tenemos por España. Y nosotros simplemente disfrutamos cada noche. La banda suena incluso mejor ahora que antes, y estoy ansiosa de compartirlo con nuestros fans, y ojalá podamos conseguir nuevos fans y amigos. Adoro el país, los seguidores, la pasión de la gente y la comida.
Nikki Hello, How are you? I suppose you’re
preparing for the upcoming Spanish tour, country that you visited in 2013 for
the first time. Do you think the Spanish public has welcomed you warmly?
Hi! I’m doing great! Very excited to return to
Spain for the next tour! Spain is one of our favorite places to tour, and
withmany fans of American music, it helps us do really well there and the
response seems to be very good for the music and the live show. I’m always so
shocked that we have these large tours there! And we just have a great time
each night. The band sounds even better now than before, and I’m so excited to
share that with our fans, and hopefully make some new fans and friends. I love
the country, the music fans, the passionate people, the food.

Madrid, Ferrol, Avilés, Pamplona, Bilbao, Vitoria, Valencia,
Murcia, Sevilla, Granada, Alicante, Barcelona….unas buenas “vacaciones” sí
señora. ¿Alguna ciudad en la que te sientas especialmente a gusto?
¡Sí! Esta es una gira extensa con un montón de ciudades bonitas que vamos a visitar. Adoro cada una de ellas, pero ha habido un par de ocasiones en los últimos años que pienso que hicimos la colada más en Madrid que nuestra propia casa, porque llevábamos mucho de gira. Por ello diría que, probablemente Madrid es donde nos sentimos más a gusto. Actualmente puedo callejear por ahí y saber por donde voy en algunas zonas.
Madrid, Ferrol, Avilés, Pamplona, Bilbao,
Vitoria, Valencia, Murcia, Sevilla, Granada, Alicante, Barcelona… those are
good “holidays”! Is there a particular city where you feel more comfortable?
Yes! This is a great tour with so many
beautiful cities that we are visiting. I love all of them, but there have been
a couple of times in the last few years of playing there that I think we did
our laundry more often in Madrid than we did at home, because we were touring
so much! Because of that I would probably say Madrid is where we feel most
comfortable. I can actually walk around and know where I’m going in certain
areas!

Dirijo y presento desde hace más de 10 años un programa de
radio llamado ADOUMA, pues algunos todavía somos unos románticos que creemos en
los flechazos, en ese amor a primera escucha, en que alguien te descubra una
canción que ponga tu mundo patas arriba. ¿Recuerdas algún tipo de revelación similar
cuando eras una jovencita?
¡¡Si!! Eso es exactamente por lo que estoy haciendo lo que estoy haciendo, por ese momento especial. La música fue un salvavidas para mí cuando yo era joven. Escuchar un disco o asistir a algún directo me hacía olvidar por un momento los malos momentos de la vida. Para mí fue, de alguna manera, una forma de encontrar mi propia identidad. Realmente me atrapó ese sentimiento y cuando más buscaba, encontraba más artistas que amaba, y nunca perdí interés. No sé porqué, pero me puse a investigar dentro de la música y los músicos que tocaban en los discos, y quería ver a cada banda en directo cada vez que podía. Pensé que todos hacían lo mismo, pero empecé a darme cuenta de que los músicos eran principalmente los que compartían ese mismo tipo de obsesión, así que creo que me ayudó a caer en esto un poco más fácil.
Cuando era una niña cantaba Gospel en el coro de la iglesia, lo que me ayudó a desarrollar mi voz. Recuerdo haber presenciado el poder que las palabras y la música tienen en la gente. Eso es algo que nunca podré olvidar. No me gustaba la iglesia, pero realmente disfrutaba de la energía de la música. No había manera de negar la intensidad y el impacto de la música en los oyentes.
I manage and broadcast a radio program for more
than 10 years now, called Adouma, since there are still some romantic people
like me, who believe in love at first sight… or love at first listen. Those
whose world can turn up said down after listening to a special song. Do you
remember having felt this sensation when you were younger?
Yes! That is exactly why I am doing what I’m
doing, for that special moment. Music was such a lifesaver for me when I was
younger. Listening to an album or going to a live show just let me disappear
for a moment when life was really heavy. It was also a way for me to find my
own identity. I became really hooked on that feeling and the more I researched,
the more artists I found that I loved, and I just never lost interest. I’m not
sure why, but I just became very invested into the music and the musicians
playing on the records, and I wanted to see every band live that I could. I
thought everyone else did the same thing, but I started to realize that
musicians were mainly the ones that shared that same kind of obsession, so I
think that helped me fall into this a little easier.
I sang gospel in the choir at church when I was
young, which helped develop my voice. I remember witnessing the power that the
words and the music had on the people. That is something I can never forget. I
didn't like church, but I really enjoyed the energy of the music. There was no
way to deny the intensity and the impact the music had on the listeners.

Una pregunta difícil. Puestos a fantasear, si tuvieses una
máquina del tiempo que te permitiese viajar a cualquier año, y tuvieses la
oportunidad de cantar a dúo con uno de tus artistas favoritos ¿Quién sería el
afortunado y qué canción elegirías?
¡Esta es realmente difícil! Hay tantos. Pienso esta vez, y diría Otis Redding, cantaría cualquier cosa con él. No es adecuada para un dueto, pero diría "That´s Where It´s At" de Sam Cooke.
A difficult question. If you had a time machine
that would allow you to travel to any year, and you had the opportunity to sing
a duet with one of your favorite artists, who would be the one and what song
would you choose to sign?
This is so hard! There are so so many. I think
this time, I will say Otis Redding. I would sing absolutely anything with him!
It’s not quite a proper duet, but I would say ‘That’s Where it’s At’ by Sam
Cooke.

¿Crecer en Carolina del Norte te ha ayudado a ser la artista
que eres a día de hoy?
Ir a ver conciertos en Carolina del Norte definitivamente me permitió escuchar y ver algunas bandas únicas, estilos de música y de arte. Pude ver a Carolina Chocolate Drops, Southern Culture on the Skids, Dexter Romweber, John Dee Holman, y otros artistas locales, y un montón de bandas que vinieron gracias a sus giras. Luego, descubriendo a todos los artistas de Carolina del Norte como Thelonious Monk, Nina Simone, John Coltrane, Link Wray, Maceo Parker, Earl Scruggs. Hay tanta variedad en la historia musical, así que creo que definitivamente influyó en mí en la forma en que me acerco a la música y que me permite permanecer abierta a diferentes estilos y sonidos.
Do you believe that being raised in North
Carolina has helped you become the artist you are nowadays?
Going to see live shows in North Carolina
definitely allowed me to hear and see some unique bands and styles of music and
artistry. I could see Carolina Chocolate Drops, Southern Culture on the Skids,
Dexter Romweber, John Dee Holman, and others locally, and lots of bands came
through on their tours. Then, discovering all the artists from North Carolina
like Thelonious Monk, Nina Simone, John Coltrane, Link Wray, Maceo Parker, Earl
Scruggs. There is so much variety in the musical history, so I think that
definitely influenced the way I approach music and remain open to different
styles and sounds.

En los últimos años en nuestro país, bandas como Freedonia,
The Excitements, CosmoSoul, Anaut o Aurora & The están teniendo muy buena
acogida haciendo Soul y R&B, y gente como Alabama Shakes, J.D.McPherson,
Eli Paperboy Reed o Nick Waterhouse parecen ayudar a que esto se dé en
cualquier parte del planeta. ¿Hay un revival de los sonidos negroides o en
realidad es que nunca se han ido?
La música nunca ha desaparecido. La música negra es música americana. No habría raíces, Rock&Roll, Soul, R&B, o como quieras llamarlo, sin eso, por lo que, en mi opinión, la etiqueta de negro es un poco redundante. Como estadounidense, es muy extraño para mí que haya una "música negra" que se sigue en otros lugares, porque es sólo la música que se oye y se escucha, y no se debería pensar en si el que la hace es o no negro. Sólo he visto esto cuando viajas a nivel internacional. Es extraño que la gente sienta la necesidad de llamarla "negra" para describir y juzgarla en cierta música. No quiero que la gente escuche algo porque es negra, quiero que la escuchen porque es buena y pueden establecer una conexión con ella. Soy una mujer americana negra. Eso es algo que no cambiará, y que llevo orgullosamente conmigo todos los días. Por lo tanto, la idea de alguien que necesita etiquetar o no etiquetar mi música como "negra" es simplemente extraño. La música Soul fue tan popular en los años 60 en Estados Unidos que creo que finalmente impregnó todos los otros géneros de muchas maneras. La música en general no va a ninguna parte. La gente siempre está escuchando y descubriendo cosas. Y si la música es buena, entonces la gente esperará escuchar más. Es por eso que las bandas mencionadas están recibiendo una cálida bienvenida en España y en todo el mundo, ¡porque son grandes bandas!
During the last years, bands such as Freedonia,
The Excitements, CosmoSoul, Anaut or Aurora & The have had a very warm
welcome in Spain, playing Soul and R&B. And, people like Alabama Shakes,
J.D.McPherson, Eli Paperboy Reed or Nick Waterhouse seem to be helping this warm
welcome to happen all around the world. Do you believe that there is a revival
of black music or do you believe that this music has never disappeared instead?
The music has never disappeared. Black music is
American music. There would be no roots, rock n’ roll, soul, r&b, whatever
you want to call it all, without that, so to label it as black is a bit
redundant in my opinion. As an American, it’s very odd to me that there is a
‘black music’ following in other places, because it’s just the music that you
hear and listen to, and there isn’t much thought to it being black or not. I
have only ever seen this when traveling internationally. It’s strange that
people feel a need to call it black in order to describe and judge certain
music. I don’t want people to listen to something because it’s black sounding
or looking or whatever, I want them to listen because it’s good and they can
relate to it. I’m a black American woman. That’s something that won’t change,
that I proudly carry with me everyday. So, the idea of someone needing to label
or not label my music as ‘black’ is just bizarre. Soul music was so popular in
the 60s in America, that I think it eventually permeated all the other genres
in many ways. Music in general doesn’t go anywhere. People are always listening
to and discovering things. And if the music is good, then people will hopefully
listen more. That’s why the bands mentioned are having a warm welcome in Spain
and around the world, because they’re great bands!

Estoy totalmente de acuerdo contigo. Las etiquetas deberían servir para orientarnos, pero nunca para limitarnos a la hora de escuchar música. La última, ¿Qué es para Nikki Hill el Soul?
